In Focus: Recent projects

The past few months have brought a great mix of projects from architecture and artwork to events, portraits and video. Here are a few recent favourites, along with a little update on what I’ve been working on behind the scenes…

HSSP Architects award entry

My first architectural shoot for HSSP Architects took me to Wymeswold in Leicestershire to photograph a recently completed residential project that they’re hoping to enter for an award.

The architects created a glass link between the original house and redesigned outbuildings, joining the two together and creating a fantastic light-filled living space. There was lots of glass to contend with from a photography point of view, but it was a great project to photograph, capturing the relationship between the old and new as well as the finished interiors.

Website refresh

I’ve given my website a bit of a refresh recently. Nothing too dramatic but I’ve reordered things, added some recent work and squeezed a little more onto the homepage. After all, it’s the page most people actually look at! Let me know what you think.

Art installation, Aldi Bardon

Possibly one of my favourite jobs of the year so far was photographing an art installation at Aldi’s head office in Bardon, Leicestershire, for the wonderful Art in Offices.

The site was built on a former coal mine, with old mine shafts still beneath it and the artwork was created to reflect the area’s industrial heritage. There were loads of interesting details to photograph and plenty of different ways to approach it. As well as the stills, I shot a range of video clips for Art in Offices and Aldi to use across their own marketing and social media.

Two years of I-REACCH

Over the past two years I’ve photographed a number of milestone events and conferences for the University of Leicester’s I-REACCH programme, which was tasked with creating a more inclusive research environment and improving career progression for underrepresented groups.

One of the latest events marked the unveiling of a new artwork by artist Carol Pairaudeau, created in collaboration with project participants. Individual prints were brought together as a collage to form a garden scene, representing the way new ideas and understanding can grow through research.

It was great to capture both the finished artwork and the reactions and conversations around its unveiling. I’m going to miss I-REACCH.

And finally…

Nothing to do with my own work, but the nominees for this year’s Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards are well worth a look. Some genuinely funny images, but also a reminder of the patience, skill and sometimes luck that’s required! Check them out here.
